Midnight Munchies & After-Hours Adventures

Image
SLO Downtown Farmers Market (Photo/Rachel Welch)  One of the most distinctive aspects of Cal Poly freshman life is juggling coursework with late-night excursions. Students come up with creative ways to make the most of their evenings, whether it's going out to eat after a long study session, discovering hidden school traditions, or taking in the local nightlife.   For many, late-night eats are a highlight. “My favorite spot is Finney’s. I always order the tri-tip sandwich and seasoned fries; it’s just a great place to go with friends,” Madison Hendley, 1st year plant science major. Others rave about SloDoCo’s 24/7 donut selection, perfect for a midnight snack.  Whatever the activity, freshmen are making every night count.  Check out this video about freshman late-night activities. Freshman Year, Dating, and Drama

Q&A with Maddy Jasso Cal Poly San Luis Obispo freshman year is a time of transition, excitement, and, for many, figuring out the complicated world of college relationships. A Cal Poly freshman Maddy Jasso discusses dating culture, and love. Maddy Jasso tried a dating app for a month but didn’t feel it offered a real connection. Instead, she meets people through friends, major-related events, and parties, finding that more natural and meaningful.  Q: Have you ever ghosted or been ghosted by someone here? What happened?   A: Fortunately, I have not been ghosted yet. But, unfortunately, I have ghosted somebody here. Sometimes, you just realize the whole superficial love thing isn’t for you. When I start talking to guys, I see red flags, like them being full of themselves or cocky. I don’t really care if I ghost them. It’s more for my well-being. We’re not even officially dating, so it’s like, whatever.  Q: Are students at Cal Poly more into relationships, situati...

What's on the Menu?

“The buffalo chicken melt at Mingle was so good in the first quarter, but then they replaced it with a ham and cheese melt,” Spencer Westbrook, Cal Poly freshman said, thinking of the ever-changing dining options.  Navigating campus dining is a special aspect of the freshman experience, from late-night food runs to beloved meals going missing.  In addition to well-known restaurants like Subway, Einstein Bros., Taco Bell, Chick-fil-A, and Shake Smart, Cal Poly has a number of dining options, such as Vista Grande , 1901 Marketplace , Campus Market, and more. Although Cal Poly strives to provide a variety of culinary options, the actual experience may seem constrained.  “The variety sounds good on paper, but in reality, it gets old fast,” said Westbrook, an environmental management and protection major.  The existing selection frequently relies too much on processed or fast-food options, he added, and as someone who has been used to a range of meal options at home, he c...
